28:128:1 After we had safely reached shore,3144 we learned that the island was called Malta.3145
28:228:2 The local inhabitants3146 showed us extraordinary3147 kindness, for they built a fire and welcomed us all because it had started to rain3148 and was cold.
28:328:3 When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood3149 and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.
28:428:4 When the local people3150 saw the creature hanging from Paul’s3151 hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer! Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herself3152 has not allowed him to live!”3153
28:528:5 However,3154 Paul3155 shook3156 the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.
28:628:6 But they were expecting that he was going to swell up3157 or suddenly drop dead. So after they had waited3158 a long time and had seen3159 nothing unusual happen3160 to him, they changed their minds3161 and said he was a god.3162

28:728:7 Now in the region around that place3163 were fields belonging to the chief official3164 of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably as guests for three days.
28:828:8 The father3165 of Publius lay sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him3166 and after praying, placed3167 his hands on him and healed3168 him.
28:928:9 After this had happened, many of the people on the island who were sick3169 also came and were healed.3170
28:1028:10 They also bestowed many honors,3171 and when we were preparing to sail,3172 they gave3173 us all the supplies we needed.3174

Paul Finally Reaches Rome

28:1128:11 After three months we put out to sea3175 in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island and had the “Heavenly Twins”3176 as its figurehead.3177
28:1228:12 We put in3178 at Syracuse3179 and stayed there three days.
28:1328:13 From there we cast off3180 and arrived at Rhegium,3181 and after one day a south wind sprang up3182 and on the second day we came to Puteoli.3183
28:1428:14 There3184 we found3185 some brothers3186 and were invited to stay with them seven days. And in this way we came to Rome.3187
28:1528:15 The brothers from there,3188 when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius3189 and Three Taverns3190 to meet us. When he saw them,3191 Paul thanked God and took courage.
28:1628:16 When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live3192 by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

Paul Addresses the Jewish Community in Rome

28:1728:17 After three days3193 Paul3194 called the local Jewish leaders3195 together. When they had assembled, he said to them, “Brothers,3196 although I had done3197 nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors,3198 from Jerusalem3199 I was handed over as a prisoner to the Romans.3200
28:1828:18 When3201 they had heard my case,3202 they wanted to release me,3203 because there was no basis for a death sentence3204 against me.
28:1928:19 But when the Jews objected,3205 I was forced to appeal to Caesar3206 – not that I had some charge to bring3207 against my own people.3208
28:2028:20 So for this reason I have asked to see you and speak with you, for I am bound with this chain because of the hope of Israel.”3209
28:2128:21 They replied,3210 “We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor have any of the brothers come from there3211 and reported or said anything bad about you.
28:2228:22 But we would like to hear from you what you think, for regarding this sect we know3212 that people3213 everywhere speak against3214 it.”

28:2328:23 They set3215 a day to meet with him,3216 and they came to him where he was staying3217 in even greater numbers.3218 From morning until evening he explained things3219 to them,3220 testifying3221 about the kingdom of God3222 and trying to convince3223 them about Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets.
28:2428:24 Some were convinced3224 by what he said,3225 but others refused3226 to believe.
28:2528:25 So they began to leave,3227 unable to agree among themselves, after Paul made one last statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly to your ancestors3228 through the prophet Isaiah
28:2628:26 when he said,

Go to this people and say,

You will keep on hearing,3229

but will never understand,

and you will keep on looking,3230

but will never perceive.

28:2728:27 For the heart of this people has become dull,3231

and their ears are hard of hearing,3232

and they have closed their eyes,

so that they would not see with their eyes

and hear with their ears

and understand with their heart

and turn,3233

and I would heal them.”’3234

28:2828:28 “Therefore be advised3235 that this salvation from God3236 has been sent to the Gentiles;3237 they3238 will listen!”3239

28:2928:29 [[EMPTY]]

28:3028:30 Paul3240 lived3241 there two whole years in his own rented quarters3242 and welcomed3243 all who came to him,
28:3128:31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ3244 with complete boldness3245 and without restriction.3246
